2024 Annual
Report

In Kansas City,
as it is in Heaven.

Dear Midtown
Church,

As a leadership team at the beginning of 2024, we prayed for the following: that as a church we would move beyond knowledge to experience God and that God would increase our capacity to serve the poor, oppressed, and marginalized. And oh my, have we seen God answer these two prayers.

In January 2024 we kicked off part two of our Come Holy Spirit series and as a result have seen so much growth in people’s capacity to not just know who God is but to experience him. Our awareness of the Holy Spirit’s presence has grown in our times of worship and prayer.

In October, we kicked off our new serving approach with Serve Sunday and saw many individuals commit to engaging regularly with one of our nonprofit partners. As we are writing this in December of 2024, Midtown has already given over $25,000 to benevolence and mission sending efforts through our care fund (microgrants), local, and global partnerships.

We also saw the Lord multiply our microchurches as we added two new microchurches this fall. As a result 7 individuals are stepping into their next stage of apprenticeship to Jesus, making disciples.

And lastly, we saw some real growth in inter-church relations as we participated in and hosted a city-wide prayer night with four other KC churches.

What a joy it is to lead a community that looks more and more like Acts 2 year after year- devoting ourselves to teachings, fellowship, and prayer; holding all possessions in common; sharing meals; and adding to our numbers daily.

As we reflect on all God has done in 2024, the miraculous and the heartbreaking, we are honored to call this community home and to play a small part in revealing the Kingdom of Jesus in Kansas City.  We cannot wait to see what God is going to do in 2025.

Lead Pastors of Midtown Church

“Truthfully, trying to convey what Midtown has been for me is not an easy task. There have been so many sweet moments here. There is an intentionality of every word of worship that glorifies God and causes me to recall His gentleness and sacrifice. The teachings dig deep into the character of the God we serve and the lessons found in Scripture. There is a desire for the congregation to know, intimately, who Jesus is and to follow in His way; rest in His peace. The people rejoice and weep together. We hug and laugh, share in the goodness and harshness of life. I could count on four hands how many people I have gotten to know and love from Midtown. I don’t mean a Sunday “good morning”, I mean friendship, community, life lived alongside one another. Every chance I get, I brag about this Jesus community. I am grateful for how gracious and generous they were to me when I first came and how quick they were to call me a friend. I am thankful for leadership that creates space to meet and know God in a personal way. My life has been enriched by being able to call Midtown home.”

“Our first introduction to Midtown was through Quandaries—a space to question and wonder together. Our friend from college was helping lead the discussion and invited us to grapple with hard topics together with the group. We came to the first meeting and then kept coming back. After a long journey, Midtown became our church home, and it has been like a breath of fresh air. We’ve been touched by the commitment to do things in a humble and transparent way. The integrity, love, and genuineness of the pastoral team and the church as a whole has created a rejuvenating and comforting place to call home.”

  • Lauren

“I started coming to Midtown consistently a little over a year ago now. After moving back to KC, the transition period felt a bit rocky and every time I came to Midtown, it felt like a safe haven; a place I could breathe and bring my authentic self. There’s something to be said about a space that’s cultivated to embrace your story in kindness and warmth. The leadership team made it easy to feel welcomed and seen. I found it to be a safe place, a refuge of sorts. And since, it’s been a sweet place to immerse myself in more & be challenged and strengthened in my faith. Whether it be through  Sunday service, micro church, or community development, I’m left encountering a new side of Christ and an excitement to grow. This truly is a place where people love Jesus and His people extravagantly. Thankful for you, Midtown!”

  • Alissa & Ethan

“We are so incredibly grateful to Midtown. We moved to KC from New Mexico two years ago and knew almost no one. We were dealing with a lot of church hurt from our previous church in NM, and then we moved here and spent a year at a church plant just for it to close. We felt really lost and I could feel myself not want to try to meet new people and become apart of a community again. But we tried Midtown, and truly everything changed. I found other moms who were in the same post partum journey as me. My husband found kindred spirits he has made life long friendships with. It’s been a safe place for us while we heal and process through our church hurt, and we are so incredibly thankful for that.”

  • Zeke (age 8)

    “I love this church!”

  • Nora (age 3)

    “I like our church.”

Revealing the Kingdom

Week after week, we gather in homes and in Midtown to declare the Kingdom of Jesus has come. That all may come to know the abundance of our King through our words and by our lives.

We aim to be the type of people who can step into eternity, in Jesus’ kingdom, and be right at home. And so, we gather around the things the Jesus-people have always gathered around; prayer, scripture, and mission. We gather to share stories, joys, and heartache. We gather to be reminded we are never alone.

In doing so we will gradually learn what it is to live as citizens of His Kingdom.

Microchurch

This last year, we saw incredible multiplication in our microchurches. We added two new microchurches in 2024 and these leaders all came from existing microchurches. That is 8 new leaders that were willing to step out in faith and risk opening their homes to friends and strangers in order to discover life with Jesus.

In addition to adding two, most of our groups are at or past capacity. This is an answer to prayer as we believe microchurch is not simply a strategy or a fad, but a necessary environment for spiritual growth. We thank God for their growth and look forward to their continued multiplication in 2024.

Sunday Gatherings

Success for any local church is not the size of their gatherings, but the quality of their disciples. We believe commitment to Sunday gathering is a rhythm that helps us grow in the likeness of Jesus..

7 new volunteers added this year
6 Lunch Parties connecting new people to the church.

Serve

As a church we are working to reclaim the word serve to mean our service to one another on Sundays and our service to the community. This year we had 4 serve days partnering with local nonprofits like Agape Pamoja, Replenish KC, and Hope Center.

Fall of 2024, we also launched our new pathway for serving called Serve the City in which we ask everyone in our church to serve with one of our nonprofit partners on a regular basis. As a result we have seen engagement in community service grow.

4 serve events with 29 volunteers

A Church of Many Workers

The biblical vision for the church is as the body of Christ: one body but with many, different parts. We want everyone – in all our differences and distinctiveness. We desire to be a place where many do a few things instead of the few doing many. In 2024, the Ministry Team of Midtown Church grew with the addition of our Board of Directors, Kim Anderson, Bryce Crowell, and Brad Coleman; and our Overseers, Matt Neslon, Lisa Clements, and Joseph Lear. Christina Gardner was promoted from Director of Musical Worship to Worship Pastor and Dani Coleman became our part-time Director of Operations. Margaret Reams also joined us as a pastoral resident.

Neighbors Coffee + Hospitality

Neighbors Church and Neighbors Coffee + Hospitality was announced in Spring of 2023 with the ambition of launching in the Neighborhood of Marlborough.

Neighbors Coffee is the missional centerpiece of Neighbors Church. As a missionary would start a business in a foreign field, so we are starting a business to impact a forgotten community in our own Neighborhood. We took the last year raising funds, finding a building, working with the city to obtain our permits, and building out our shop. We’re also very proud that, though we haven't opened a brick and mortar yet, we began an online store where we have been selling our own roasted beans and merch.

Neighbors Church had seen growth and an excitement to start monthly gathering. In June of 2024 we had our first gathering in the Marlborough Community Center. We have committed to the rhythm of monthly gatherings and weekly microchurch meetings for the time being. The slow grassroots approach has been very healing for our people and we’re looking forward to what this year holds.

Amanda Berger Missionary to Armenia, Columbia

In 2024, we announced that our associate pastor, Amanda Berger, will be moving to Colombia, South America to serve as a Career Missionary with the Assemblies of God. If you’ve been a part of the Midtown community, you know that Amanda has played a key role in the planning and launching of this church. Her dedication and passion for ministry have left a lasting impact on our congregation.

At Midtown, we value not only building community but also sending disciples out. Amanda will begin a substance abuse recovery program in Armenia, Colombia, and we are excited to partner with her in this next journey. In the coming months, she will be fundraising and preparing for her move Fall of 2025. Learn more about how you can partner below.

Teachings

In 2024 we reflected on the gifts of the Holy Spirit, prayer during spiritual nights, the resurrection story as reflected in 1 Corinthians 15, being a Jesus community for our city, sexual formation, 1 Peter, and the advent story.
