Prayer for our City.
The following includes scriptures, written prayers, and prompts for intercessory prayer; we encourage you to let your prayers emerge from this foundation. Specifically, invite the Holy Spirit into your walk and ask him to bring to mind a specific person or image. Ask the Holy Spirit to highlight a house, business, or person to pray for as you walk.
Karl Barth says, “to clasp the hands in prayer is the beginning of an uprising against the disorder of the world.” Let’s partner with God to set our city to rights through prayer.

+ Prayer for Times of Trouble
In moments of turmoil and conflict, God is our refuge and strength.
Scripture
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
– Psalm 23:1-6
Prayer
Dear Lord, you are the risen Christ, the Prince of Peace, the Mighty God,
and the Everlasting Counselor. Grant us peace of mind and help our hearts
to not be troubled during these difficult and uncertain times.
Give us the strength and grace to trust you even when we cannot see the way.
Remind us that you will never let us go and that you will always hold us in your
everlasting arms of love. We ask all of this in the name of Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.*
Intercession
Take time to pray that God would be a refuge for those experiencing trouble in our city.

+ Prayer for Justice in our City
Our God is mighty, just, and holy.
Scripture
The Lord reigns; let the peoples tremble!
He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!
The Lord is great in Zion;
he is exalted over all the peoples.
Let them praise your great and awesome name!
Holy is he!
The King in his might loves justice.
You have established equity;
you have executed justice
and righteousness in Jacob.
Exalt the Lord our God;
worship at his footstool!
Holy is he!
Moses and Aaron were among his priests,
Samuel also was among those who called upon his name.
They called to the Lord, and he answered them.
In the pillar of the cloud he spoke to them;
they kept his testimonies
and the statute that he gave them.
O Lord our God, you answered them;
you were a forgiving God to them,
but an avenger of their wrongdoings.
Exalt the Lord our God,
and worship at his holy mountain;
for the Lord our God is holy!
– Psalm 99:1–9
Prayer
Grant, O God,
that your Spirit may so move every human heart and especially the hearts of the people of this land, that barriers which divide us may crumble, suspicions disappear, and hatreds cease; that our divisions be healed, and that we may live together as one people. Help us, in the midst of our struggles for justice, equality, and truth, to confront one another without hatred or bitterness, and to work together with mutual forbearance and respect, that we may be one, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.*
Intercession
Take time to pray that God would vanquish the injustice and corruption that plagues our city, replacing it with righteousness and justice.

+ Prayer for Peace in our City
We pray for the peace of our city, for in its peace we will find peace.
Scripture
Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness!
You have given me relief when I was in distress.
Be gracious to me and hear my prayer!
O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame?
How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah
But know that the Lord has set apart the godly for himself;
the Lord hears when I call to him.
Be angry, and do not sin;
ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah
Offer right sacrifices,
and put your trust in the Lord.
There are many who say, “Who will show us some good?
Lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord!”
You have put more joy in my heart
than they have when their grain and wine abound.
In peace I will both lie down and sleep;
for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
– Psalm 4:1–8.
Prayer
O God,
you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth,
and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near:
Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you, bring the nations into your fold,
pour out your Spirit upon all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.*
Intercession
Take time to pray that God would deliver our city from violence and conflict, that we may be led into his peace.

+ Prayer for the Forgotten in our Neighborhood
The salvation of our God is for the neglected, afflicted, and forgotten.
Scripture
The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor,
and the day of vengeance of our God;
to comfort all who mourn;
to grant to those who mourn in Zion—
to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.
– Isaiah 61:1–3
Prayer
Almighty and most merciful God,
we remember before you all poor and
neglected persons whom it would be easy for us to forget: the homeless and
the destitute, the old and the sick, and all who have none to care for them.
Help us to heal those who are broken in body or spirit, and to turn their
sorrow into joy. Grant this, Father, for the love of your Son, who for our sake
became poor, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.*
Intercession
Take time to pray for those in our community that have been overlooked, that they would experience an outpouring of God’s favor.

+ Prayer for the Brokenhearted
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Scripture
Come, O children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
What man is there who desires life
and loves many days, that he may see good?
Keep your tongue from evil
and your lips from speaking deceit.
Turn away from evil and do good;
seek peace and pursue it.
The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous
and his ears toward their cry.
The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,
to cut off the memory of them from the earth.
When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears
and delivers them out of all their troubles.
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
and saves the crushed in spirit.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
He keeps all his bones;
not one of them is broken.
Affliction will slay the wicked,
and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
The Lord redeems the life of his servants;
none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.
– Psalm 34:11–22.
Prayer
O God,
who brought us to birth, and in whose arms we die, in our grief and shock contain and comfort us; embrace us with your love, give us hope in our confusion and grace to let go into new life. You have taught us in your holy Word that you do not willingly afflict or grieve your children. Look with pity on the sorrows of your children who mourn. Remember them, O Lord, in mercy; nourish our souls with patience; comfort us with a sense of your goodness; lift up your countenance upon us; and give us peace, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.*
Intercession
Take time to pray that God would bring comfort and mercy to the brokenhearted and those who mourn.

+ Prayer for those with Addiction
May the God of the Exodus deliver.
Scripture
And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”
And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down.
–Luke 4:17-20
Prayer
O blessed Lord,
you came to set the captives free and ministered to all who came to you. Look with compassion upon those who, through addiction, have lost their health and freedom. Restore to them the assurance of your unfailing mercy; remove from them the fears that beset them; strengthen them in the work of their recovery. And to those who minister to them, give patient understanding and persevering love, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Intercession
Take time to pray that God would bring freedom and wholeness to all struggling with addiction.

+ Prayer against the Powers of Evil
We wrestle not with flesh and blood, but with the powers of evil.
Scripture
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel.
– Ephesians 6:10–19.
Prayer
Almighty God,
you have called us to live as salt and light in a dark world and to stand against the works of darkness. In seasons when we encounter spiritual warfare, obstacles, and attacks of the enemy, arm us with the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, to stand against the enemy’s lies. Equip us with strength, wisdom, and discernment through the power of the Holy Spirit and send your angels to watch over us. Finally, remind us that you will never leave us nor forsake us in whatever battle we may face. All this we ask, in the powerful name of Jesus Christ.
Amen.*
Intercession
Take time to contend with the powers of evil by reminding the darkness that it has been defeated in Christ’s resurrection.

+ Prayer for Victims of Violence
Our God judges those who shed the blood of the innocent.
Scripture
You have rebuked the nations; you have made the wicked perish;
you have blotted out their name forever and ever.
The enemy came to an end in everlasting ruins;
their cities you rooted out;
the very memory of them has perished.
But the Lord sits enthroned forever;
he has established his throne for justice,
and he judges the world with righteousness;
he judges the people with uprightness.
The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.
And those who know your name put their trust in you,
for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.
Sing praises to the Lord, who sits enthroned in Zion!
Tell among the peoples his deeds!
For he who avenges blood is mindful of them;
he does not forget the cry of the afflicted.
– Psalm 9:5–12.
Prayer
Lamb of God
You take away the sins of the world
Have mercy on us.
Grant us peace.
For the unbearable toil of our sinful world,
We plead for remission.
For the terror of absence from our beloved,
We plead for your comfort.
For the scandalous presence of death in your Creation,
We plead for the resurrection.
Lamb of God
You take away the sins of the world
Have mercy on us.
Grant us peace.*
Intercession
Take time to pray for victims of gun violence and domestic violence. Pray that our God would be quick to save and heal.

+ Prayer for Good News to be Recieved
We pray that our city may experience the good news of Jesus.
Scripture
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
–John 3:16–21.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ,
you stretched out your arms of love on the hardwood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name.
Amen.
Intercession
Take time to pray that our city and neighborhood would be receptive to the good news of our victorious Christ.
*Adapted from the Book of Common Prayer
+ Lord's Prayer
We pray as our savior taught us to pray.
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours now and for ever.
Amen.
+Prayer of Confession
We take the time to confess our sin, to acknowledge our rebellious wills and wayward hearts, and the ways in which we've contributed to the injustice in our city. May we be reminded that Jesus has made us the forgiven community.
Most merciful God,
We confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent,
for the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.
+ Prayer of St. Francis
We pray as our savior taught us to pray.
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.*
