Pentecost
Pentecost | pen·te·cost
1.a Christian feast observed on the seventh Sunday after Easter commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit on the disciples of Christ.
2.the birth of the Christian Church following Christ's resurrection and ascension.
In Luke's gospel-sequel, Acts of the Apostles, we learn our [the Church's] origin story. We are reminded that Pentecost is not just the celebration of a past or historical event, but also the promise of encounters with the Spirit of God that have yet come.
To encounter the Spirit of God similarly to the early church disciples is to declare the Kingdom of God is here. Therefore, we celebrate Pentecost Sunday to remember the work of the Spirit past, present, and future, to remember we are sent to declare that the "kingdom of God has come near.’
“And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.” – Joel 2:28-29
